REC is a leading manufacturer of high quality and high efficiency multicrystalline solar cells. The solar cells are designed and tested in order to produce the maximum power output. Two cell types are manufactured, an alkaline and an acidic-etched-treated cell, which feature a darker, more uniform texture. REC is continually improving the PV conversion efficiency of multicrystalline solar cells by highly efficient automated processes and high quality standards.
REC Cell production takes place at REC ScanCell AS in Narvik, Norway, in state-of-the-art production lines, and is among the fastest growing solar cell factories in Europe. The production facility is made up of two separate production lines developing wafers from REC Wafer to solar cells. From the startup in 2003, the factory has been continually expanding and in 2009 the capacity was 225 MW of solar cells per year. The majority of the production is delivered to the REC Solar's module manufacturing plant, excess cells are sold to a few other companies.
REC is currently building the world's largest wafer, cell and module production facility, located in Singapore. When the facility is completed and operational in 2010, REC cell manufacturing will triple to a total production of 780 MW.
