REC Wafer is our operating division producing multicrystalline wafers for the solar industry. REC Wafer also produces monocrystalline ingots and is expanding its position to include monocrystalline wafer production. We are a world leader in the industry, and have been at the forefront of the industry since the company was formed as a specialized producer of multicrystalline wafers for the PV industry under the name ScanWafer AS in 1994.
| REC Wafer operates wafer processing factories in Glomfjord and Herøya, Norway which produced multicrystalline wafers with an implied effect of 542 MW in 2008. In Glomfjord we had an additional 40 MW of monocrystalline production capacity. REC Wafer is in the midst of a series of expansion projects, both in Norway and in Singapore where work is well underway for a combined wafer, cell and module facility. Multicrystalline wafer capacity is expected to reach 2.4 GW when all the expansions are complete in 2011, and monocrystalline production capacity at 300 MW.
REC Wafer has been an industry leader in developing and implementing high productivity equipment and processes for large-scale industrial operation. The wafer segment contributes to the strength of the REC Group through its focus on continually generating process improvements that reduce the cost of wafer products, while also increasing their energy conversion efficiencies.
About 950 people were employed in the three wafer plants in REC at the end of 2008.
