Safety and health

Safety is a continuous priority at REC. Fundamentally, we believe that all accidents, injuries and occupational illnesses are preventable. We therefore aim to operate with zero harm to our employees, contractors, partners, customers and communities.

REC is a fully integrated manufacturer of solar modules and materials, meaning that we operate in both chemicals processing and high technology manufacturing. We are committed to meeting the highest safety, environmental and health standards across the value chain.

To achieve our objectives, we have and are continuously developing our management systems, tools and training that drive continuous improvement in our performance and risk management within safety and health. Our Singapore facility throughout 2011 worked to implement the globally recognized health and safety standard OHSAS 18001. The certification was successfully achieved in November 2011.

We comply with all relevant local safety and health regulations. Furthermore, we integrate safety and health considerations into the design, manufacturing, delivery, handling, usage, recovery, recycling and disposal of our products. Our safety and health policy is communicated to all employees and we work with our business partners to implement practices that follow that policy.

Safety performance

To achieve the overall objective of zero harm, the REC Group has a set of safety targets and key performance indicators that are deployed throughout all units in the operations. We monitor the outcomes, report the results internally and externally, and execute audits.

Up untill now, the REC Group has had no work related fatalities. In 2010, we experienced 29 Lost Time Injuries (LTI) to our staff, resulting in an LTI-rate of 3.9, which was a 60 percent improvement from 6.5 in 2009. In 2010 the number of Total Recordable Injuries (TRI) was 59 and the TRI-rate 7.8, an improvement of 59 percent from 13.2 in 2009.. For 2011 the target is a further 50 percent improvement in LTI-rate and TRI-rate.

As well as measuring the number of injuries, we use leading indicators that drive our safety culture towards world class, such as HSE observations reported by employees and management HSE job observations.  In 2010 there was more than 15,500 HSE observations registered, which equals 3.7 reports per full time employee. For 2011 the target is 4.
