REC Group Partner Spotlight: The HONNOLD FOUNDATION
The Honnold Foundation envisions a world where all people have equal access to opportunity and live in-balance with the environment. Founded by acclaimed rock climber Alex Honnold, the Honnold Foundation believes in solar as a proven, environmentally sound solution to global energy poverty, and awards grants to community organizations whose projects are innovative, equity-focused, and have the potential to shift the narrative on what’s possible for energy access worldwide.
The Honnold Foundation prioritizes communities that are particularly susceptible to the effects of climate change. The mission is to fund solar power initiatives—not only as a clean and sustainable energy source—but as a means to ensuring climate resiliency and self-sufficiency in vulnerable communities distinctly affected by environmental crisis and socio-economic inequity.

“We tend to find projects that are a little bit more out there—a little bit more innovative and super community-based. Our dream projects are ones that shift the needle on what's possible for energy access in marginalized communities,” says Executive Director, Dory Trimble.
The Honnold Foundation partners with community-based organizations all over the world who are using solar energy to improve lives and reduce environmental impact. REC Group is proud to be a Honnold Foundation Core Partner and we are jointly committed to funding projects and organizations with strong ties to the communities we serve. To-date, we have supported projects through the Honnold Foundation that are as broad ranging as providing solar to 10 households in Detroit, Michigan, and establishing Puerto Rico’s first cooperatively managed, community owned solar microgrid.

As our work with the Honnold Foundation develops, we’ll continue to share our progress and the stories that transpire along the way.
